Why your business isn't growing. It's probably not the marketing.
When revenue flattens, most owners buy more marketing. It's the most visible lever and the easiest to sell. In the businesses we audit, it's the right answer less than half the time. Here are the five leaks we find first, in the order we check them.
1. Enquiries that go nowhere
Count last month's enquiries. Now count how many got a reply within an hour, a second follow-up, and a clear next step. For most service businesses the first number is fine and the other three are embarrassing. More marketing makes this worse, not better. Fix: one owner for follow-up, a response-time rule, automation for the first reply, a CRM so nothing depends on memory. Full breakdown in leads not converting.
2. A website that describes you instead of converting
Open your site on your phone and try to become a customer in under a minute. If you can't, nobody else can. Speed, one obvious next step, proof above the fold, a way to enquire that isn't a form nobody checks. See traffic but no enquiries, or how we approach website redesign.
3. The owner is the ceiling
If every quote, decision, hire and complaint goes through you, the business grows exactly as fast as your week allows, and your week is full. This is the leak owners feel most and name least. The fix is systems before people: see the owner is the bottleneck.
4. Margin leaking through delivery and pricing
Revenue up and profit flat means the cost of delivering grew faster than the price. Unbilled scope, discounts given to close, manual admin that eats hours, prices that haven't moved in three years. Nobody notices because sales look fine. We look at margin by service, not just the total. More on that in operations and finance.
5. Marketing that was never going to work
Yes, sometimes it is the marketing: ads with no tracking, the wrong platform for the customer, a campaign that was switched on and never looked at again. But it's number five for a reason. Fixing it before the first four means paying to send more people into the same leaks. Once they're fixed, marketing and ads is where the money starts coming back.
What to do with this
Pick the one that made you wince and start there. If it's more than one, or you can't tell, that's what the revenue leakage and operations audit is for: we look at all five in your numbers and tell you the order.
